Despite progress made in recent years, millions of people around the world still lack access to basic life necessities, hindering their ability to lead healthy lives. Better infrastructure, access to clean water and secure food supplies, as well as assistance in times of emergency are important to ensure vulnerable communities have the chance to thrive and grow. A deeper understanding of the effects of climate change will also contribute to a more resilient future. The 6th CASSINI Hackathon challenges you to develop innovative concepts and products using European space data and services from Copernicus and Galileo & EGNOS. These novel solutions should support sustainable infrastructure development, strengthen food security & access to clean water, and aid in the forecasting and understanding of forced migration. Showcase your inventive spirit by developing viable solutions that will catalyse global innovation and provide aid to those in need.

The CASSINI Hackathons and Mentoring, initiated by the European Union and its space programme, is a series of six hackathons that tackle global challenges using European space technologies. Now in its sixth edition, this hackathon provides access to European space data, information and signals from Copernicus, Galileo and EGNOS, plus other valuable tools to help participants take on one of our three global challenges. The top ideas will be awarded at both local and EU levels, and the overall winners will enter a six-month mentoring programme that includes 100 hours of customised expert mentoring.

Here’s what to expect: If you are a rising innovator in Europe, you are invited to participate in the CASSINI Hackathon at one of our ten locations. Each hackathon location features its own unique set of experts, prizes, and additional special features. Once you select a location, it’s time for registration, team formation and ideation! Your team will choose to solve one of three challenges, all related to the theme of international development and humanitarian aid:

  1. Supporting sustainable infrastructure development: Develop concepts, products, or services to create sustainable and impactful solutions. We encourage participants to dive into the areas of spatial planning & site selection for infrastructure development, renewable energy production forecasting, future-proofing transportation & mobility infrastructure, critical infrastructure monitoring for remote communities, and assessment of infrastructure damages caused by natural disasters or conflict.

  2. Strengthening food security & access to clean water: Develop concepts, products, or services to create sustainable and impactful solutions. We encourage participants to dive into the areas of anticipatory action for extreme weather events, agricultural yield forecasts and optimisation, logistics & resource allocation for emergency humanitarian assistance, land cover & use monitoring, access and management of groundwater, and monitoring of water quality parameters.

  3. Understanding and forecasting forced migration: Develop concepts, products, or services to create sustainable and impactful solutions. We encourage participants to dive into the areas of digital tools for migratory processes and population movements, planning due to natural and man-made disasters, transportation, and logistics to support displaced communities, impact of desertification in rural communities, and monitoring coastal communities and erosion.
